Fagradalsfjall volcanic eruption

One of the most exiting things to have happened in Iceland in 2020 was the volcano eruption in Geldingadalur which is very conveniently located just about 30 minutes drive from Reykjavik.

For almost a month we have been feeling the earthquakes in Reykjavik (which is a rather unusual occurrence). Some of them have been rather strong and, even though we knew they weren’t dangerous, made us feel a little bit uneasy. Earthquakes ended when the volcano started erupting on the 19th of March. Everyone was very excited (and they still are) and the very next day people started hiking to the volcano. At first the hike was rather long, app. 3-4 hours one way. However at the moment it takes around 1 hr 15 min.

We hiked to Geldingadalur on day 5 or 6 of the eruption (now it’s been over a month and the area changed dramatically since we have visited: at least 6 other fissures have opened, some have even stopped erupting already). I don’t think you can forget the sight of erupting volcano ever. I was really impressed!
